Now in the book of Jeremiah Israel is told that her exile will last 70 years. However in Daniel 9 the angel Gabriel comes to Daniel after he had confessed Israels unfaithfulness to Go d's covenant In vs23 he tells Daniel that he has come to give Daniel wisdom and understanding. Gabriel tells Daniel that the time of restoration is not after 70 years in Babylon. Instead vs 24 tells us it will take 70 weeks of years upon the people and the Holy City (Jerusalem) to finish transgression. To put an end to sin, to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness. Gabriel then proceeds to give him a timetable of events. Here is the timetable leading to the events of their restoration. Read vs 25-27. From the rebuilding of Jerusalem to the coming of the "Anointed One" there will be 7 weeks. The Anointed One is another way of talking about the Christ. Then after 62 weeks the anointed one will be cut off. After the Anointed One is cut off a prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Also by destroying the sanctuary (temple) he will cause sacrifice to cease. This prince is the abomination who causes desolation. This prophecy of events gives us a good idea concerning Israels future.
Now a key to interpreting these events is to interpret them historically. The 7 weeks from rebuilding Jerusalem to the arrival of the Anointed One or Christ. In the light of the New testament this is Jesus. The Anointed One being cut off is the death of Jesus The prince who comes to destroy Jerusalem and the temple was the emperor Titus. This is what Jesus was speaking about when he prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in Mat hew 24. In Mat hew 24:15 Jesus tells them when they see the abomination who causes desolation standing in the temple as prophesied by Daniel (let the reader understand]. These events took place about 40 years after Christs death. So it would be true to say that all that Daniel spoke of in Daniel 9 has already come to pass. If you accept that, then it has consequences in your understanding Israel and their restoration. If you add the 7 weeks to the 62 weeks and another 1week, that comes to the 70 weeks of years for Israels that it would take for Israel to be forgiven and restored.
All of this is caught up in the Christ event. Jesus Christs death on the cross is where Israels sins were forgiven.(Isaiah52&53) However there is a revealed mystery. Who are Israel? The true Israel are those who have put their trust in Go d's Christ, Jesus. All who didn't believe on him came under Gods wrath and suffered the consequences these are ethnic Israel. Ehnic Israel are the unbelievers even to this day, concerning Jesus being Go d's Christ.

It is Titus who the apostle Paul talks about in Thessalonians. The anti Christ who sets himself up as God in Gods temple. Paul was telling the people of that generation to expect this to happen. Jesus also told the people this generation will not pass away until all these things have come to pass. This is extremely important to understand that it has happened.
Christians who are waiting for the temple to be rebuilt are actually blasphemous without releasing it. If sacrifice is to be offered again it is to say that Jesus hasn't come. For sacrifice again to be offered means that Jesus hasn't paid for our sins. Daniel is very clear that after the Anointed One is cut off, the temple will be destroyed and sacrifice will be put to an end. The reason sacrifice is put to an end in the context of Daniel is because Israel has been restored because her sin has been forgiven. Isaiah 52&53 are clear that it is by Yhwhs suffering servant that Israel will be redeemed. That leaves us with the ? what about Israels continued exile. The fact that Jews have only returned to Israel after 2000 years tell us they are still in "exile" because they haven't inherited an Edenic land Also there is no temple there which is a sign to them that the Christ has come Also the temple signified that God was among them. So the absence of the temple is a sign to them that God is not among them. Well even at the time of Christ they never inherited the promised Edenic land. Because after all God told them that when he forgave them they would in a sense return to this Edenic land. God hasn't been unfaithful to his promises in Deuteronomy 30 nor Ezekiel 36, nor Jeremiah 31 & 32. It turns out what many Jews never understood was that all the nations, not only Israel would inherit this Edenic land. In the New Testament in Revelation 21 Gods people inherit the new heavens and Earth where the curse will be no more. This event is right after the dead have been raised, the wicked judged to damnation and the righteous inheriting The Kingdom of God.
