In Luke 6:1-5 we see Jesus comes up against the Pharisees and their misinterpretation of the Sabbath.
They accuse Jesus' disciples of been lawless by doing what they say is unlawful to do on the Sabbath.
Jesus disciples had been plucking grain and rubbing it in their hands to eat it. No they are not stealing, as it is allowed in Gods law to eat from a crop. The Pharisees obviously saw this as working, and the law said no work was to be done on the Sabbath. Jesus answers the Pharisees by referring to King David. He tells them of how King David and those with him entered the house of God and took and eat the bread of the presence. He points out that, that wasn't lawful to eat, except for the priests. Then Jesus answered them saying "The Son of Man" is Lord of the Sabbath!!!" Jesus is telling them that He is the Messiah as the Son of man is the messianic title from Danie7. He is equating Himself with Yhwh who brought in the Sabbath ordinance by saying that He Jesus is the Lord of the sabbath. This is so loaded and yet fits into Jesus been the Christ, who has come to Israel to redeem them. What is more if God is visiting them when the Kingdom of God is been preached, then the time of the Kingdom has come. Their salvation is at hand, the great Sabbath rest which the Sabbath day points to has come.It is indeed the year of jubilee. The significance of what Jesus is saying is that because He is Lord of the Sabbath means that God is in Jesus visiting Israel to bring in the long awaited Sabbath rest. It isn't plainly a revelation that He is God in the flesh. He is also saying that to be merciful to the hungry on the Sabbath is acceptable and right in Gods sight, otherwise King David would have been condemned. Luke 6:6-11. The Pharisees dispute with Jesus over the Sabbath continues in a synagogue on another Sabbath day. They the Pharisees were there to see if he would heal on the Sabbath that they might accuse Him.This was to become a regular thing with the Pharisees spying on Jesus to accuse and condemn Him. Jesus knew what was in their minds, while in the synagogue on the Sabbath. so Jesus invited a man with a withered hand to stand with Him.He told the man to stretch out his hand and the witherd hand was totally restored. The Pharisees we're told were furious!! So again the issue of what is lawful comes up and Jesus asks them questions. Jesus asks is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath,to save Life or to destroy it. After the man was healed instead of worshipping Jesus as the King of Israel they were filled with wickedness to see what they could do to him. The Pharisees had no understanding of God or His law. Also since no one had ever healed in Israel and mighty miracles are been performed by the hand of God, they have no recognition of the time they are in. The healings are only supposed to happen in the Kingdom and they are happening before their eyes. Even the powers of the age to come are happening before them. They show themselves to be Gods enemies by perverting and opposing Gods true religion. They are people stuck in the immediacy of things and not people looking for the glorious hope and future in the great Sabbath rest of Gods Kingdom. The healing of the mans withered hand also shows that the Sabbath year which is the Kingdom has come to Israel and that Gods King was displaying the "Sabbath rest" ,part of which is full healing which again was only supposed to happen in Gods Kingdom |
